What I do as a Clinical Neuropsychologist
My focus is on helping clients in their adjustment and in their rehabilitation, working with them to develop strategies and 'compensatory aids' for their particular difficulties. I work not only with the client, but depending on the situation, can also connect with partners, families, case managers, other professionals, and employers.
Cognitive Skills Rehabilitation
Cognitive skills rehabilitation is important in helping the client to reach their goals. Perhaps they want to stop forgetting people's names, or stop missing appointments. Or perhaps they would like to be less distracted when trying to manage their daily life. Clients learn and use specific strategies and what are known as 'compensatory aids' to work around their individual problems with concentration, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, or reduced thinking speed. Working with family members is also important so that they know how best to support the person. If clients are returning to work, this includes linking with the employer. At times, other health professionals may be working with the client, and it is important to link in with those people as well as case managers if involved.
Rehabilitation for Changes in Emotion and Behaviour
Commonly after brain injury, people may not only have difficulties in thinking skills (e.g. memory, concentration), but they may have changes in their emotions, their personality and their behaviour. In this area, it is particularly important that the rehabilitation approach is not only with the client in an individualised way, but also involves carers, family members and any other key people.
Adjustment to Life Changes
Receiving a life-changing diagnosis can mean that everything we took for granted is suddenly turned upside down. Time for making sense of what has happened is important. Some of the therapy tools, appropriately adapted as needed, can be very helpful to support people in finding a way forward. This might include CBT, ACT, Solution Focused Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, or other therapies as appropriate.
